LAKER SHAKES HISTORY

Dorothy E. Lanham was the original owner of the building and it was called The Glen Lake Workshop, we know that it was built in the late 1950’s.

Dorothy was an artist studying at the Chicago Art Institute and then worked at Rand McNally as a cartologist before moving back to Burdickville to build and open the workshop.

When the Faulman’s retired and closed the Glen Lake Trading Post in 1978, Burdickville was left without a source for ice cream cones and other necessities.

In 1985 Dorothy Lanham closed her Glen Lake Workshop.

Conscious of Burdickville’s tradition as a small commercial center, Dorothy resolved to sell to someone who would retain her shop as a business.

Rich Hargreaves stepped into the Burdickville scene, purchasing the small store and residence and opening Laker Shakes.

For 22 years he provided cones and shakes at prices from another decade.

LELAND COMET HISTORY

The Leland Comets are the athletic teams representing Leland Public School (Ty’s wife Johanna is a 1992 LPS grad) in Leland. The Leland Comets athletic programs have a rich history filled with hard-fought seasons, state championships, and more. The Leland Comets Legacy Fund was established in 2021 to sustain the history and tradition of athletic excellence.

The Comets have achieved notable success in various sports, including a historic run in boys soccer, where they reached the MHSAA Final for the first time in school history. In 2023, the Comets achieved their 22nd district title in school history in volleyball, despite having a roster of only seven players.

The Leland Comets Legacy Fund was created to support and sustain the athletic programs that might not otherwise be fully funded in the school budget. They strive to maintain the tradition of excellence and provide financial assistance for the programs.

WILCO HISTORY

Empire Air Force Station is a former United States Air Force Aerospace Defense Command (ADC) long range radar site located 0.7 miles (1.1 km) south-southeast of Empire, Michigan, in Empire Township. It was closed in 1978 by the Air Force, and turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Today the site is part of the Joint Surveillance System (JSS), designated by NORAD as Northeast Air Defense Sector (NEADS) Ground Equipment Facility.

Wilco Road may or may not be named for the pilot-speak “wilco” which means “will comply”. It’s a way for pilots to acknowledge that they have received and understand a transmission, and they intend to follow the instructions given.

BARB’S BAKERY HISTORY

A popular morning meet-up spot and home to good old-fashioned donuts, Barb’s Bakery has been a staple of the Northport community for decades, and now, it’s under new management. In the summer of 2021, Margo and David Millard purchased the bakery from Barb and Jerry Holcomb in order to keep the bakery’s small-town tradition alive and operating for locals and tourists alike. Having grown up in Northport, David felt a special connection to the establishment, so when it came up for sale, he and Margo made the jump into the realm of business owners. David, Margo, and David’s brother Tyler (who serves as head baker) all closely trained with Barb to maintain the bakery’s integrity. This month marks the Millards’ second anniversary of owning Barb’s Bakery, and Margo happily provided some behind-the-scenes details.

“Our world-famous cinnamon twists are definitely the fan favorite! We have a unique blend of spices and other special ingredients we use for this flaky cinnamon pastry. They dip great in coffee, and I love to buy a few extra to bring home and warm up and serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.”
